‘Ariadne auf Naxos’ by Richard Strauss
A Tribute to Burle Marx

A new production of Ariadne auf Naxos will revive the celebrated 1988 staging featuring Roberto Burle Marx’s original sets and costumes, first presented during the season led by Fernando Bicudo as Artistic Director of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro. Directed by Fernando Bicudo, the new production marks his return to this landmark work nearly four decades later.

The performance will be conducted by Eugene Kohn, returning to the podium after leading the acclaimed 1988 production and bringing together the original artistic vision with a new generation of performers.

Presented as a tribute to Roberto Burle Marx’s contribution to the performing arts, the production will also honour the Brazilian Association of Lyric Artists (ABAL).

The performance will be complemented by specially commissioned contemporary dance interludes inspired by themes of nature, transformation and the relationship between humanity and the natural world, creating a dialogue between opera, dance and landscape.
